tie method:
Didn't actually do any tying on this jacket. I did use packing tape to mask off the collar, cuffs and trim. On the front I used strips of paper to as a temporary mask in a cross-criss pattern. Also, it was dry at time of tying and dyeing—it has been soaked in soda ash previously.
dye method:
I flicked a needle nibbed squeeze bottle to get dye splattered across the shirt. I started on the back and tried to get a relatively even coverage with some patches of higher spot density. On the front I decided—on the fly—to change up the pattern a bit and create a geometric, tartan-inspired pattern.
on the design:
This jacket is an experimental peace—it was the first time I've tried splatter dyeing any garment. I bought the blank over a year prior intended to dye it but kept putting it off because it was "too nice" and I wanted to save it. I wanted to establish the '''peacewhere''' line with t-shirts, but I thought it would be cool to put in at least one non-t-shirt.
on the final product:
I like the back a lot. I think it's got some snow leopard vibes going on. At first, I wished I had stuck with the same pattern method on both sides—like whole jacket would be more coherent. But on the other hand, you get a different look coming then you do going. In the future, I might not mask off the trim and let the pattern have all the space. The packing-tape-mask worked well, though a small spot of black did get on the back collar.
