  • tie method:

I marked lines on the shirt to create vertical pleat folds. Starting at the bottom of the shirt I made pleat folds with a mountain fold being made on the marked lines. But I did this only for the bottom 5” horizontal band. So in this band the distance from top to bottom is 2” and the “wavelength” of a band (unfolded) would be 4”. Then after completing the fan fold, I tied tightly at the top end of the horizontal band. Then added a couple of ties at the mid-point and bottom of the band. Then for the next band, I repeated the same type of pleat fold, but reversed: what were mountain folds in the previous band become valley folds in this band (and vice versa). I repeated this process up to the top of the shirt.

  • dye method:

I dyed both the top and bottom of the tied shirt completely, but with a light a coat of dye as possible. I used approximately 1 oz of dye mixture.

notes
  • on the design:

I looked through the excellent book "Shibori: the inventive art of Japanese shape-resist dyeing" and I saw a pattern called the "willow". So this was my apptempt to replicate that more traditional pattern. This was my third attempt at this pattern. Along with PCWH 19, this shirt was tied & dyed before '''peacewhere''' was officially established.

  • on the final product:

I was pretty happy with how this turned out. However, it didn't look nearly as detailed as the examples of the "willow" pattern that I had seen in the book. I suspect that they were made with thinner fabric of only one layer (versus the two layers—front and back—of the t-shirt).
